Cotehele House and Gardens, owned by the National Trust, is situated on the west bank of the River Tamar. This beautiful house, built from granite and stone during the Tudor period, is surrounded by an amazing, diverse collection of formal and informal garden areas. These include a Walled Garden, a Valley Garden with historic Summerhouse and Dovecote, Ancient Orchards, herbaceous borders, secret intimate areas, wild areas and a network of paths leading to a variety of woodland walks, with nature conservation and industrial archaeology interest. It truly is a garden of surprises, but be warned, some of the paths in the garden are very steep.
The house, built between 1485-1627 features an amazing collection of textiles, furniture and armour. The rich tapestry hangings, above the large Tudor fireplaces, make a stunning display typical of Tudor Manor Houses. No old house however, would be complete without ghostly goings on and hazy figures. These along with music playing in the distance and a strange herbal smell all add to the atmosphere of Cotehele.
