“The most beautiful place as ever was seen”. Samuel Pepys 1683 Mount Edgcumbe House, surrounded by 865 acres of Country Park on the Rame Peninsular, almost completely surrounded by water, is one of the earliest landscaped parks in Cornwall. The house was originally built between 1547-1553; however, throughout its history many changes to its structure have taken place. 1958 saw the beginning of its current restoration, after having been gutted by enemy action in 1941. As with all estates the gardens are divided, the Country Park, home of 55 Grade 2 listed structures, is also home to grazing wild fallow deer. The Formal Gardens, situated in the Lower Park near Cremyll, were created around 200 years ago. Originally classed as a 'wilderness garden’ these 10 acres are now themed in traditional English, Italian and French style gardens. The Earls Garden, created adjacent to the house, is home to ancient and rare trees and includes a 400 year old Lime tree.
Over recent years Camellias have been added to this beautiful estate and there are now around 1000 varieties, which create a stunning display from as early as January.
