Trewithen, Cornish for ‘house of trees’ is internationally renowned for its rare collection of shrubs and trees, seldom found anywhere else in the country. These 30 acre gardens were created by George Johnstone around 100 years ago, during the time of the great plant hunting expeditions. Many of the plants seen here today were just seeds brought in from China, Burma and Assam.

Trewithen Garden is predominantly a spring woodland garden, although also home to a spectacular array of Magnolias, Camellias, and Rhododendrons. Tree Ferns, Azaleas and Acers can also be found surrounding a sunken garden, whilst further exploration will uncover a beautiful walled garden and pool.
Surrounding all this, you will find a beautifully landscaped parkland.

Trewithen House, one of the most elegant Georgian houses in Cornwall, with his tree boarded lawned front garden, originates back to the 17th century. However, between 1715-1750 it was re-architectured by Sir Robert Taylor and Thomas Edwards and remains just that way today.
